Case Study 1: Wantage


Change is something that husband and wife team, Lyn and Mike Rowe, have always embraced within their successful Costcutter store in Wantage.

Using Costcutter’s unique Shopper First data, Lyn and Mike were recently inspired to make considerable changes so they could better meet the needs of local shoppers – both existing shoppers and those they wished to attract more regularly into their store.

As part of a complete refit, Lyn and Mike expanded their chilled and fresh offer and brought in an extensive range of Co-op Own Brand products.

Sales soared by +20.5% year on year and the chilled, fresh fruit and veg categories grew by +50%, while food-to-go increased by +65%. Average basket spend has gone from £7.15 to £8.50 and is still growing!

Case Study 2: Haverhill


Roger Westrope runs a busy forecourt located on the main road into the busy market town of Haverhill.

Working with the team at Costcutter, the opportunity was identified to increase footfall and basket spend by developing their food-to-go offering.

A £60,000 refit saw the amount of space allocated to food-to-go doubled including the addition of Co-op Own Brand sandwiches and snacks and more hot food added including pastries, pizza, pastas and hot dogs with an adjacent Costa Coffee machine. 

Since the refit, footfall numbers have increased by an average of +10%, with an extra 1,000 people coming through the doors each week. Food-to-go sales have increased by +40% year-on-year and total store sales have increased by +25% (excluding fuel).
